Over the years, "Saturday Night Live" has evolved into a litmus test for musicians. If you're a band on the rise, then landing a gig on "SNL" can make or break you. If you're an established act, appearing on the sketch show can cement your greatness. And if you're a legend, agreeing to be on the show goes a long way in showing that you're still accessible to the masses. No matter what their status in the music world, just about every musician agrees: performing on "SNL" is a good gig.
And a slew of artists have done just that since the show's premiere 38 years ago, some more memorable than others of course.
